HERE Maps for Samsung
About Project
Samsung asked HERE to develop a native maps app for their new mid-range smartphone. The device was running a new native OS called Tizen.
For this one, the timeline was incredibly tight. We had 3 months to design, test and localise the app on this new platform - about a third of the usual timeframe.
I led a small but motivated design team to develop a visual approach, produce, and validate designs in time for the device launch.
To design well, we needed to get familiar with the interaction models and visual language, and compare them against what we were familiar with from HERE’s other Maps apps. Before moving into production, we explored a mixture of HERE’s and Tizen’s visual language on key areas of the app. The keyscreens that came out of this exploration would set a visual design direction for the rest of the project.
As we worked on each section of the app in detail, there was some risk that design decisions made on earlier sections wouldn’t work in the later ones. To minimize this risk, we created a small library of common components and variables that we could adjust with the dev team as the designs progressed.
